Massive Fire Sweeps Through Home In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- An extra-alarm fire broke out late Monday afternoon and tore through an abandoned house in Newark.

Around 5 p.m., Newark firefighters were called for the blaze at the abandoned two-story wood-frame home at 62 Telford St., near South Orange Avenue. The fire was quickly raised to the second alarm, according to the Newark Fire Department.

The fire was brought under control after about 40 minutes, although firefighters went on spraying water on it afterward, officials said.

While battling the blaze, one firefighter fell through the floor – resulting in a mayday call, officials said. He was quickly rescued uninjured and went back to fighting the fire, officials said.

There were no injuries in the fire. The house next door at 64 Telford St. sustained minor damage, officials said.

Due to smoke and water damage, two families composed of three adults and seven children were relocated from 64 Telford St. by the American Red Cross, officials said.

The cause and origin of the fire were under investigation late Monday.
