Man Hit, Killed By Garbage Truck In Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was struck and killed by a garbage truck Wednesday in Newark, authorities said.

The Mack garbage truck plowed into Earl Wheeler, 58, early Wednesday morning in the 500 block of Doremus Avenue in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office.

The driver of the truck was trying to back into a garbage bay to dump a load when the truck hit Wheeler, prosecutors said.

Wheeler was pronounced dead at 4:48 a.m. Wednesday, prosecutors said.

The garbage truck driver stayed at the scene, called for emergency services, and was cooperative, prosecutors said. The investigation continued Wednesday evening and no charges had been filed.
