Newark Fire Captains Charged Separately With Selling Bootlegged DVDs, Impersonating Police Officer

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Newark fire captain was indicted on charges of selling pirated DVDs Tuesday – just a day after prosecutors announced the arrest of another captain in the same department on charges of impersonating a police officer.

In the latest incident, Jose Robles, 50, has been indicted on charges of trademark counterfeiting, misconduct by a corporate official, and pirating offenses.

Essex County prosecutors claimed Robles, the owner of The Fortress of Solitude Comic Book Store at 53 University Ave. in Newark, had over 11,000 counterfeit or pirated DVDs worth more than $100,000 at his store.

Detectives raided the store and also seized several pieces of computer and digital equipment that was believed to have been used for making counterfeit DVDs, prosecutors said.

On Monday, Union County prosecutors announced charges against another Newark fire captain, Anthony Graves, stemming from traffic stops he allegedly made in his fire department vehicle in Newark and Hillside on Nov. 30, 2014.

Union County prosecutors are handling the investigation so Essex County prosecutors can avoid potential conflicts of interest.

Authorities said Graves, 47, of Newark resident was not working in any official capacity at the time of either traffic stop.

In both instances, he allegedly activated the emergency lights in his fire department vehicle and verbally questioned both motorists. But they said he didn't issue any summonses or try to make any arrests.
