Police: Man Held After Walking Onto Empty Plane At Newark Airport

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was in police custody late Wednesday, after allegedly trespassing onto a plane at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The United Airlines plane was sitting unoccupied at Gate 74 at the airport around 8 p.m. Wednesday, when the suspect opened the door and got onto the plane, police said.

The alarm on the plane went off, and police responded and took the man into custody, police said.

It was unclear how the suspect got onto the tarmac, police said.

Police late Wednesday were sweeping the plane for security purposes.

Earlier in the day in an unrelated incident, a United Airlines hangar collapsed at the same airport, leaving nine workers trapped and four of them injured. The hangar was in the process of being dismantled at the time.
