1 Killed, 3 Wounded In Shooting At Newark Housing Development

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Four people were shot and one of them was killed in a shooting in Newark Wednesday evening.

Police were called at 5 p.m. after the shooting outside 64 Hawkins St. in the John W. Hyatt Court Houses public housing development. Police were combing the scene late Wednesday and evidence markers were set up on the ground, CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported.

Armando Degracia had just gotten home from work and sat down to dinner when he heard the unmistakable pop of gunshots. He told 1010 WINS' Al Jones he ran to the door.

"I heard about eight shots – seven, eight shots, I heard – and that's when I came out, because you know how you know people outside, so I came out to see if everything was OK, and that's when I saw the body on the floor," Degracia said.

The grandfather the victim killed -- a 16-year-old boy – told CBS2 the teen and his family moved to the development this past summer to get away from another dangerous situation.

"My daughter's house was shot up back in June, sometime in the summer, because she used to live in the other projects and they shot up her house," said Herbert Waldron. "She went to the housing authority for an emergency move, for safety reasons and they moved her over here."

The grieving mother of the boy who was killed had little to say between sobs.

One of the other victims suffered grave injuries, while the other two were expected to survive, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's office. The ages or genders of those shot were not immediately learned.

There had been no arrests as of late Wednesday night, and it was not immediately clear what sparked the violence. Police believe at least one person involved in the shooting sped away in a car.
