New Yorkers Recycle Used Christmas Trees At Annual Mulchfest

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Before you kick your Christmas tree to the curb, why not consider 'tree-cycling' it?

As CBS 2's Janelle Burrell reported Saturday, New York City is holding its annual Mulchfest this weekend.

The citywide event includes 36 chipping sites and 47 drop off sites for residents to discard their trees in a more environmentally friendly way.

The mulch that is created will be spread around gardens and other green patches in New York City, Burrell reported.

"We're going to take this freshly chipped mulch from Christmas trees brought here to the Tompkins Square Park location and spread that mulch on the street trees surrounding the blocks of the park," said Ryan Green, of the Lower East Side Ecology Center.

Volunteers chipped in on Saturday, riding around the neighborhoods to collect trashed trees so they could be chopped, Burrell reported.

Those who participate in the event are given a free bag of mulch to take home with them.

Mulchfest, which is in its 18th year, ran from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday and will run again at the same times on Sunday.
