Tri-State Area residents brace for another rainy, windy weekend

Tri-State Area businesses feeling the impact after weeks of rainy weekends

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The wind and rain will be back to impact weekend plans.

It's the seventh straight weekend with rain in the Tri-State Area.

Potential for flooding, poor road conditions on Long Island

Clogged sewer drains are already a problem on parts of Long Island.

Umbrellas are working double time, and so are windshield wipers on harrowing drives alongside trucks spraying water, creating slick conditions.

"I'm sick of this. This is crazy. I work all week. I want the sun to be out on the weekends," one person said.

LI officials warn weekend weather & fallen leaves could cause clogged sewers

Workers on Friday tried to finish jobs while being pelted by rain, and Halloween decorations are at risk in yards as families prepare for extreme weekend winds.

"Residents need to be aware. We have been raining every single weekend, and it's going to happen again this weekend. But it's a bad combination because we are expecting a significant amount of rainfall and 33 mph winds in the fall. That means leaves are going to be hitting the ground. You're going to have slippery roads, and we're going to have flooding in our storm grates," Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald Clavin said.

Clogged sewers are already starting, and Clavin is asking residents to phone in trouble spots.

Still, some see a silver lining.

"Rain is good, helps everything grow, cleans everything, and I saved on my water bill with all this rain, so it's all good," one person said.

Businesses promoting fall fun feeling the impact

On a fall Friday night, the Ward's Farm Pumpkin Patch in Ridgewood, New Jersey, should be packed with families picking their pumpkins and enjoying a firepit and music.

Unfortunately, low turnout was the sad reality for the seventh weekend in a row for the business, and many others so far this season.

The farm's owner shares that profit-wise, he says he'll be lucky if he breaks even this season, due to the washouts every weekend.

Those running Dr. Woodcliff's Haunted Greenhouse and Mansion in Hudson Park, New Rochelle, said their opening night for the season was planned for Friday, but they had to push it back.

Executive producer David O'Neil told CBS New York he's trying to dry off the attraction as much as he can, adding it's good weather to stay home and watch a movie, but not good weather for outdoor activities.

"We're just hoping the rest of the weekend will be really nice. We think Saturday and Sunday are gonna be great. We're open five more nights, so let's hope," he said.
