New York Cosmos To Play Against Cuba's National Team In Havana
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A local soccer club is headed to Cuba.
As 1010 WINS' Sonia Rincon reported, ever since their reboot a few years ago the New York Cosmos, who play home games at Hofstra University in Hempstead, have been keeping their tradition as American soccer ambassadors.
"The club has had a history of traveling overseas, breaking down some barriers and opening doors," said team chairman Seamus O'Brien.
That's why O'Brien said the opportunity to play Cuba's national team in Havana is something that happened naturally.
The game also has the full support of U.S. Reps. Gregory Meeks and Charles Rangel.
Rangel said he was in Havana when President Barack Obama announced the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
"And there were two things that all the Cubans said that they loved about the United States," Rangel said. "One was sports and the other was every damn thing else."
The big match will be played June 2.
