New York City reports death of 2 people who had monkeypox

New York City will now refer to monkeypox as MPV

NEW YORK - Two people who had monkeypox have died, New York City officials said Friday.

In a statement, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said:

"We are deeply saddened by the two reported deaths and our hearts go out to the individuals' loved ones and community. Every effort will be made to prevent additional suffering from this virus through continued community engagement, information-sharing and vaccination."

Officials added both patients had prior health issues that put them at greater risk.

Health officials remind everyone that fatal cases are rare, and the number of people testing positive has been declining since August.

Meanwhile, the city is changing how it refers to monkeypox. Cases will now be called "MPV."

The city says the previous name is inaccurate and labels a community that has already been subjected to bigotry that can keep people from seeking care.

Just Thursday, State health commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett announced a new plan to raise awareness about MPV with a social media video contest for college students.
