New Rochelle School Shuts Off Drinking Sources Due To Lead Concerns
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Rochelle elementary school has shut off all of its drinking sources due to elevated levels of lead.
Michael Galland, principal at George M. Davis Jr. Elementary School, sent a letter to the families of the student body to inform them that lead was discovered in "isolated portions" of the school.
"Under the advice of our consultants advising the district, our administration this weekend shut off all drinking sources at the school. The consultants are now concerned the recent flushing of the water system may have circulated potential problems that were previously isolated to once section of the building – and we do not want to take any risk," the letter reads. "As we have taken other precautionary safety measures over the past month, shutting down all drinking sources for the rest of the school year, we believe, is prudent."
Galland added that bottled water and coolers will be provided at the school for the rest of the school year.
The New Rochelle School District will work with the state's Education Department and the Westchester County Health Department to ensure the safety of the students.
