New Plan Could Leave City Charter Schools With Less Funding
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- City charter schools have already been criticized by Mayor Bill De Blasio and now, they are getting less funding.
Under the Eduction Department's proposed Capital Plan, Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina will shift $210-million away from charter schools in an effort to create more than 2,000 new Pre-k seats.
James Merriman, CEO of the New York City Charter School Center, said that the big question is whether the mayor will allow charter schools to have a slice of the Pre-K money.
"And if he isn't I think fair-minded people around this city then have to conclude that the pre-k program is unfortunately more about ideology," Merriman said.
Charter schools would need a change in state law in order to offer Pre-K. Merriman said that money lost was only a tiny fraction of what charter schools will need for facilities. He said that is what makes co-location with public schools so vital.
