New Pet Project: Hempstead Using Mobile Unit To Spay, Neuter Feral Cats
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The town of Hempstead has a new tool for fighting the feral cat population.
The town now has a mobile pet vet vehicle, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray said it's a surgical suite so that feral cats that are outside someone's home or in a wooded area can be spayed and neutered free of charge and then set free.
"We have residents -- caring residents -- who see that there is a whole group of cats living in their backyard, in the neighborhood," Murray said. "And so they call us now on a regular basis."
Murray said the mobile unit will also be used for the town shelter.
"Not only are we going to be able to perform all our surgeries on our own dogs and cats in our animal shelter, but we have the flexibility and the mobility to actually go to feral colonies," Murray said.
