New Jersey Police Officers Reunited With Newborn They Helped Deliver
NEW MILFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Three New Jersey police officers checking on a car crash suddenly had to make a special delivery Sunday.
CBS2's Meg Baker was there as the officers were reunited with little Naomi and the Obolo family Thursday.
New Milford Police Sgt. Justin Pisano, Capt. Kevin Kiene and Officer Samuel Gerais recalled how they rushed to Huguenot Drive to help a woman in labor.
"It seemed a little hectic at the time, but we knew what we had to do," said Gerais.
Jemalyn Obolo said her water broke in the middle of the night. She didn't have any pain, but things escalated quickly.
She managed to walk down the stairs, but couldn't get any father. So she laid down on the floor to give birth.
"By the time we got to the bottom of the stairs, the baby was pretty much out," father Christopher Obolo said.
He traded places with Gerais, who was ready with gloves on.
"I'll be honest, I didn't know what to do. I just knew I had to support the baby as it was being born," he said. "I was nervous."
"He's a soccer goalie too, so he has good hands," said Kiene.
"We were just concerned about the mom and the baby at the time," Pisano added.
The mother and baby were taken to Hackensack Medical Center immediately after the birth.
"My heart was pumping, yeah," Christopher Obolo said. "We are very fortunate, so thank you, everybody, the officers, EMS for coming so quickly."
The New Milford police chief says he's extremely proud of what they did.
