MTA Looks For Bidders In Proposed 'Contact-Free' MetroCard Program
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is making plans to replace MetroCards with new technology.
The new "contact-less" system will allow subway and bus rides to flash bank cards, mobile devices or MTA-issued "smart" cards for payment, removing the need to swipe a card at the turnstile, CBS2 reported.
Companies are now being asked to bid for the project, which is expected to be in place by 2020. The MTA anticipates traditional MetroCards to be phased out under the plan by 2022.
The Daily News reports the MTA intends to spend $419 million on the new program through 2019.
