New London HS Principal: Football Players Subjected To Racist Slurs After Plainfield Game

HARTFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A Connecticut high school principal says members of his school's football team were subjected to racist taunts by fans in the town of Plainfield.

Two men were charged with breach of peace after a scuffle broke out between Plainfield High School fans and some New London High School players who were walking to their bus after Friday night's game.

New London principal William "Tommy" Thompson III says a group of about 20 adults waited for his team after the game and taunted players with epithets.

Plainfield Police Chief Michael Surprenant said Tuesday that nobody interviewed by police mentioned the slurs, but he says the investigation is continuing.

First Selectman Paul Sweet says his town is embarrassed by the incident and it does not reflect his community in rural eastern Connecticut.
