New Law Requires Suffolk County Retailers Post Warnings About Liquid Nicotine

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Liquid nicotine will now come with warning signs in Suffolk County.

Retailers will be required by local law to display signs warning consumers of the dangers of liquid nicotine, which is not regulated by the federal government.

"We need to do more and because the FDA is not taking responsibility and doing what they need to do, Suffolk County is," Legislator Sarah Anker, who wrote the law, told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs.

Dr. Rachel Boykan of Stony Brook Hospital said liquid nicotine can be addictive and dangerous.

"I don't think people realize how dangerous they are," Boykan said. "People have to realize that this is not the answer to their cigarette smoking."

The legislation was drafted after the death of a 1-year-old child in Fort Plain, New York who ingested liquid nicotine.

The law is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.
