New Jersey Officials Call For Ban On Tourism Helicopters

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Wintertime is quiet time, but come summer, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer knows it will be chopper time.

"Helicopters flying low over our homes and parks -- enough is enough," she told reporters, including 1010 WINS' Al Jones, on Wednesday.

"We still endure an endless parade of helicopters flying low over our homes and parks," Zimmer added.

Zimmer is among the elected officials backing Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto's bill that would ban tourism helicopters from using state-owned facilities as a base, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.

"This is for the quality of life of the residents," said Prieto, D-Secaucus. "It's of safety and health concerns."

The ban would not effect private or corporate choppers, but supporters say it would greatly reduce helicopter traffic over the Hudson River.

New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler noted that those against the push to ban choppers from downtown Manhattan have argued the tourist helicopters would just use New Jersey helipads.

Passing the bill "takes that argument of the table," he said.
