New Jersey Motorists Not Keen On Possible Gas Tax Increase
TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- New Jersey's roads and bridges are crumbling and lawmakers are seeking ways to pay for improvements, but a call to hike the state's gasoline tax might hit a roadblock.
As 1010 WINS' John Montone reported, drivers don't deny that the state's roads and bridges are in bad shape.
"Route 4, certain spots are messed up," said one motorist.
"They're terrible, the worst," said another driver.
Bill, a truck driver, said while roads may be worsening, he thinks if lawmakers raise the gas tax now, there's nothing that will stop them from doing it again and again.
"My general idea about politicians is: don't give them anymore money," he said.
Gasoline is relatively cheap in New Jersey because the gas tax is the second lowest in the entire nation, Montone reported.
Jack, a limo driver, said he would like it to stay that way.
"When you come out the Lincoln Tunnel. That, I don't know what they're going to do with that. Parts of (Route) 1/9, I could go on and on," he said. "(Montone: Yet you don't want to pay more money to get them fixed?) No, I don't. I already get taxed enough."
Among the proposals being discussed in Trenton: the state's 14.5-cent gas tax could double, or even triple, Montone reported.
