New Jersey Man's Bid To Carry Concealed Weapon Could Head To Supreme Court

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Gun control remains a highly controversial debate, even for the New Jersey Supreme Court who threw out a scheduled appeal that had been filed by a Monmouth County man who claims that he should be allowed to carry a gun.

In 2013, the court decided to take on Richard Pantano's appeal. A lower court had struck down his permit to carry a concealed handgun and it appeared that the high court would have a voice in the often controversial area of gun control.

In May, the state supreme court changed its mind and in a one sentence statement threw out the appeal, WCBS 880's Jim smith reported.

Pantano, a landscaping supplier in Monmouth County, argued that his second amendment rights were being violated.

He said that his business dealings leave him with large amounts of cash during off hours and that he needs to carry a handgun.

The lower court ruled that he did not have a justifiable need, but Pantano's lawyer said that the case could head to the U.S. Supreme Court.
