New Jersey Man Saves Child From Nearly Drowning

RIVER VALE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A New Jersey homeowner's quick-thinking saved a child from nearly drowning.

The incident happened during a family gathering at Vince Ascolese's home in River Vale.

He said everyone was in the backyard and some of the kids were swimming in the pool.

Ascolese said the 8-year-old boy's parents turned away for just a moment, and when they turned back, the boy was face down at the bottom of the pool.

He immediately jumped into action.

"I said, 'Get him out, get him out now,'" Ascolese said. "I don't remember running downstairs. Finally pulled him out, he was blue. I knew right away. My instincts kicked in – get CPR, get him oxygen."

The boy was airlifted to Hackensack University Medical Center where he is expected to stay overnight.
