New Jersey Man Pleads Guilty To Role In Forced Religious Divorce Case

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A New Jersey man has admitted his role in a scheme to force a Jewish man to grant his wife a religious divorce.

Lakewood N.J. resident David Wax pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to a complaint charging him with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, federal prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, the 51-year-old was paid $100,000 by the victim's wife to force her husband to give her a religious divorce.

Wax and a group of conspirators allegedly lured the man from Brooklyn to Wax's New Jersey home under false pretenses in October 2010.

The group then bound, blindfolded and assaulted the victim until he agreed to the divorce, called a "get,'' prosecutors said.

Wax faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced on Aug. 19.
