Thousands Take Part In New Jersey Organ, Tissue Donation Walk

NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Organ and tissue donations is at the forefront in New Jersey Sunday as thousands walked to raise awareness.

WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported that there are 5,000 people in the Garden State waiting for a life-saving organ transplant and 122,000 nationally.

Elisse Glennon of the New Jersey Sharing Network said people are becoming more and more generous.

"Last year, we had a 37 percent increase in organ transplants," Glennon said. "We transplanted 531 people."

One donor can save eight people, and one tissue donor can help 50.

Glennon is urging people to register to become a donor and speak with your loved ones about your wishes.
