New Jersey-Bound Bayonne Bridge To Temporarily Close Thursday

BAYONNE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Officials are warning residents to expect delays Thursday morning as the New Jersey-bound side of the Bayonne Bridge will temporarily close as part of the ongoing "Raise the Roadway" construction project.

The closing will take place from 11 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

During the closure, contractors are expected to perform demolition work on a concrete toll island adjacent to the bridge's northbound lanes.

All traffic heading from Staten Island into Bayonne will be stopped to safely complete the work. Southbound traffic will not be affected.

The closures are part of a $1.2 billion project to raise the 82-year-old bridge's roadway by 64 feet to give larger ships access to New York and New Jersey ports.

The new bridge will also feature wider lanes and a median.
