Gurbir Grewal Stepping Down As New Jersey Attorney General

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal is stepping down to take on a new role with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Grewal is set to become the director of the SEC's enforcement division beginning July 26.

He has served as New Jersey's attorney general since 2018.

Tuesday night, Grewal visited the former site of the Paddock Bar in Asbury Park and formally apologized for his office's role in the systemic targeting of LGBTQ bars in New Jersey between 1933 and 1967.

In a statement Tuesday, Gov. Phil Murphy thanked Grewal for his efforts with police reform and fighting gun violence.
