New Firm Signed To Take Over Long Island College Hospital

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The State University of New York announced Tuesday that it has signed a contract with Fortis Property Group to take over the financially strapped Long Island College Hospital.

SUNY announced the signing on Tuesday. The SUNY Board of Trustees had voted late last month to approve the agreement, which will include an emergency room and an ambulatory surgery center but not a full-service hospital.

Fortis is partnering with New York University's Langone Medical Center, which is scheduled to take over operations at the facility from SUNY on Sept. 1.

The contract now has to be approved by New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

State officials said LICH had been losing $13 million a month.

The hospital had been set to close altogether last month, but SUNY decided to keep providing walk-in emergency services -- in an effort of good faith -- while a deal is finalized.

Another deal between SUNY and the initial top bidder to run the hospital, Brooklyn Health Partners, fell apart last month.

Fortis has said it will be meeting with community leaders in coming weeks to discuss its plans.
