Catherine McVay Hughes who heads Community Board 1 in lower Manhattan hopes the new ferry reduces traffic.

"These three round-trip ferries a day will provide a bit of relief to the congestion due to taxis, black cars and private cars in our dense neighborhood," she told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

The service is offered for the morning and evening rush hours. A round trip fare is $8, but trips will be free of charge this week.
