Teens Report Possible Luring Attempt In New City
NEW CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Rockland County are issuing a warning to parents and children after a possible luring attempt in New City last week.
Two 14-year-old boys told police they were walking at around 3 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Goebel Road and Scher Drive when a man driving a red car offered them a ride, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported. He flashed a badge and claimed to be a cop, the boys said.
The teens refused the ride, and the man drove off.
Clarkstown police want children to know that a plainclothes officer would never approach a child and tell them to get into a car.
"There's probably going to be another officer as well," Officer Peter Walker said. "Their vehicle is probably going to have lights like a police car would. They would also have a shield around their neck. You could always ask to see the shield or maybe an indentification card.
"And if it's a suspicious incident, and you don't feel comfortable with it, always just take yourself on out and call home or call the police department itself," Walker said.
Children may also request a uniformed officer or police supervisor.
The suspect is white, is in his 20s and has a beard and short hair, police said. His red car, possibly a Nissan, has an Army sticker on the rear bumper.
