2 Dead After Car Plunges Into Raritan River In New Brunswick
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two people are dead after their car plunged into the Raritan River overnight in New Brunswick.
It happened just before 1 a.m. Monday.
Police said a Honda Accord was headed north on Route 18 when it somehow lost control, veered off the road and into a guard rail before landing in the river.
Police brought diving crews and marine units to the scene to help find the victims.
"Apparently, there's a vehicle in the water, possibly a passenger in there," police said in radio calls on Broadcastify. "We have a missing second occupant of this vehicle. We are going to need Marine One launched."
The driver, 22-year-old Robert J. Veras-Toribio, was found outside the car by officers and friends, who arrived on the scene and began administering CPR, police said. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
The passenger, 21-year-old Kelvin Lantigua, was found inside the car and was also pronounced dead at the scene.
