Nearby Shooting Prompts Shelter-In-Place Order At Lower East Side School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Students and staff were held in a Lower East Side school late Tuesday afternoon, after a shooting nearby.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. in front of a LaGuardia Houses public housing development building at 300 Cherry St. One person suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, police said.

With the perpetrator on the run, the shooting prompted a "shelter in place" order at nearby P.S. 137 John L. Bernstein, at 293 East Broadway, the city Department of Education told CBS 2.

There were about 572 students and staff in the building at the time, and they were ordered to stay where they were, the DOE said.

School safety helped get them out of the building through a back door afterward.

No one was in custody in the shooting as of early Tuesday evening.
