Nassau SPCA Vows Stronger Court Presence In Animal Abuse Cases

WOODMERE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Three investigators from the Nassau County SPCA sat shoulder-to-shoulder in the front row of the courtroom Thursday at a conference for an animal abuse case, vowing a stronger court presence when it comes to animal abuse cases.

From now on, the investigators say they will be in court for each and every case involving animals.

The SPCA's Bob Sowers told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall this comes after another person was given probation instead of jail time for the mistreatment of pets.

"You don't have a deterrent when you look at like this Hernandez case, if you look at the pictures of the pit bulls and what this guy did, and for this guy not to get, to get probation, it's a joke," Sowers said.

It is up to the judge to decide sentencing. The Nassau District Attorney spokesperson said they always ask for the maximum penalties.
