Nassau PD: 2 Killed In Crash While Fleeing Police

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A driver and passenger were killed after their vehicle crashed while fleeing police, Nassau County police said.

The crash happened at around 4 a.m. Sunday in Hempstead.

Nassau County police said a highway patrol officer stopped to investigate after he observed two people arguing in a parked van on Main Street.

While the officer was standing near his cruiser, the driver intentionally backed into the patrol car twice and sped away, authorities said.

Shortly after, police said the van collided with another car while speeding on Hempstead Turnpike.

The victims -- identified as 22-year-old Jackeline Reyes, of Bellmore and 23-year-old Eduardo Zapata, of Westbury -- were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle refused medical attention.
