Nassau County Pays It Forward With Traffic Ticket Amnesty Program
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Nassau County is paying it forward for overdue parking ticket holders in honor of National Random Acts of Kindness Day.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and the Nassau County Parking Violations Agency have announced a program that will allow drivers with outstanding parking or traffic violations to pay off their fines without hurting their credit.
The program will also offer opportunities for reduces or waived fines for those qualified based on their current financial situation.
Nassau County has around 572,000 outstanding parking tickets that have not been paid, WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola reported.
The initiative applies to all drivers who hold tickets that have been issued before Jan. 1, 2014, and includes infractions like red light violations, uninspected vehicle tickets and failure to stop at a stop sign.
Ticket holders who are required to appear in court for their ticket, or those who have received a ticket after Jan. 1, 2014 request an in-court conference to negotiate potential reductions in fees.
The program will run from Feb. 22 to May 22.
