Nassau County Finance Board To Vote On Ending Wage Freeze
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Nassau County workers will learn later Friday whether they'll be getting their first pay raise in several years.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, the county's financial control board will vote Friday afternoon to possibly lift the three-year wage freeze on county employees.
The state's approval of speed cameras will help pay some of the $129 million price tag, Xirinachs reported.
Police Benevolent Association President James Carver said he expects a positive vote from the Nassau Interim Finance Authority.
"We have conformed to NIFA's strict guidelines on what had to be done to lift the wage freeze, we've met those guidelines and we anticipate that it will be approved by the NIFA board later today," Carver told Xirinachs. "Certainly that the incoming 160 recruits that are about to take this job, knowing that the wage freeze is lifted and they won't be stuck at $34,000 indefinitely."
The vote affects four of the county's five major unions, including police and civil service employees.
"I think this is a win for the public," said Carver.
The speed cameras to be positioned near school zones are estimated to bring in $25 million for the county each year. As many as 56 cameras were approved for use in Nassau County by state lawmakers.
