Nassau County Exec. Proposes Increasing Fees For County Services
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Nassau County residents could soon be paying more to park at the beach, golf, and other county services.
As WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs reported, the county executive's plan would raise service fees for things like renovation permits, golf, beach parking and museum visits.
Under the plan, inspections would cost an additional $61, adult annual membership at Eisenhower Park's Aquatic Center would rise by $50 and weekend golf at the park would go up from $36 to $40.
Taxpayers are mixed on the proposal.
"How could you keep raising the fees? I think if the fees go up a reasonable amount, I'm OK with that. If they can manage money through these golf and entertainment fees, I say more power to them," one Nassau resident told Xirinachs.
"Everything is way too much money. It's out of control," another man said.
Officials said the fee hike would raise an estimated $15 million and would be used to help pay for new labor contracts for county employees.
Democrats on the Republican-controlled legislature call the proposed fee hikes a "backdoor tax" and plan to vote against the plan.
