Nassau County Ready For Belmont Stakes

BELMONT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Thousands of spectators are expected to descend on Nassau County Saturday for the 148th running of the Belmont Stakes.

Even without a triple crown possibility, the race at Belmont Park will have a huge financial impact on the region.

"We expect the Belmont Stakes has about a $10 million economic impact here to our great county," County Executive Ed Mangano said Friday.

But with the anticipated 50,000 spectators comes security concerns and traffic jams, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

"I would encourage everybody to use mass transit," said Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter.

The Long Island Rail Road is adding 20 additional trains to Belmont Park on race day.

And don't forget those big brimmed hats.

"We need to show the world that we have a New York chic racing style," hat designer Christine Moore told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa.
