Nassau County Police Urging Residents To Lock Car Doors

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- After nearly 600 car break-ins so far this year in Nassau County, police are putting out warnings to residents.

"The thefts are occurring at all times of the day and night in which the vehicles have been left unlocked," Nassau Police Lt. Richard Lebrun told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall. "These areas of concern are usually parking lots and mall parking lots."

Lebrun also had advice for car owners, especially as the holiday season approaches.

"Always lock your vehicle even when it's parked in your driveway or garage. Never leave or hide a smart key, valet key, or spare key in or around your vehicle no matter where you park it," he said. "Never leave valuables in your vehicle that can be observed in plain view."
