Nancy Pelosi To Join Gov. Andrew Cuomo In Rally For Paid Parental Leave

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to continue his efforts to promote his paid family leave initiative at a rally in Manhattan Thursday morning.

Cuomo has been pushing his "Strong Families, Strong New York," campaign statewide. The proposal calls for 12 weeks of paid benefits to allow workers to care for new children or other family members.

The proposal would force employers to deduct up to 60 cents per week so employees could take up to 12 weeks off and get 35 percent of their usual paycheck

Cuomo will be joined at the event with house Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Vice President Joseph Biden joined Cuomo in a rally held in January to advocate for the cause.

Mayor Bill de Blasio approved a plan for 6-week paid parental leave for around 20,000 non-union workers in New York City in December 2015.

The event will be held at 10 a.m. at the West Side YMCA in uptown Manhattan.
