Investigation Finds Inmates Of Color Disciplined At Higher Rates At N.Y. State Prisons

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An investigation has found that in state prisons, black and Latino inmates were disciplined at higher rates than whites.

As WCBS 880's Myles Miller reported, the investigation by the New York Times found that the inmates of color were disciplined twice as often in some cases.

Glenn Martin was incarcerated at Attica and is a prison reform advocate. He described what he said happened to him.

"A correction officer pointing, 'I don't care how you leave this area,'" Martin said.

The New York State Department of Corrections pushed back on the Times' report, saying race played little role in discipline and it is important to look at an inmate's full disciplinary history

Early last year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would take steps to close state prisons. So far, there has been no action.
