Survey: Workers Think NJ TRANSIT Values On-Time Performance Over Safety
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A survey has revealed that NJ TRANSIT workers believe those in charge think being on time is more important than being safe.
As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, the survey was commissioned in 2013, in the wake of a deadly Metro-North Railroad derailment in the Bronx in December 2013.
The Federal Railroad Administration and a Metropolitan Transportation Authority panel both found after the accident that Metro-North was sacrificing safety for on-time performance.
The Bergen Record obtained the confidential report – commissioned by NJ TRANSIT for $467,000 and conducted by Rail Safety Consultants of upstate Pittsfield, New York.
The survey found that found NJ TRANSIT workers have little faith in the office dedicated to protecting consumers and workers, saying it is understaffed and overwhelmed, the newspaper reported.
An NJ TRANSIT spokeswoman told the newspaper the agency receives complaints from customers, and the agency's leaders takes the safety of commuters and workers very seriously.
