N.J. Prosecutors Bust Alleged Sports Betting Ring, Arrest Dozens
HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of people were arrested this week in an illegal sports gambling enterprise across New Jersey and New York.
As WCBS 880's Monica Miller reported Friday, the four-month investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's office ended with the arrests of 29 people and the execution of 42 search warrants across northern New Jersey and New York.
Investigators uncovered crimes related to an illegal sports gambling ring, and money laundering, that prosecutors said netted about $3 million by accepting wages on everything from horse racing to football.
The defendants allegedly non-traditional wire rooms, in the form of offshore, Internet-based gambling services, prosecutors said.
Bettors and agents were given code names and passwords so as to prevent being identified, prosecutors said. Wagers placed exceeded roughly $50 million over the course of a year, prosecutors said.
The investigation was ongoing Friday night.
