N.J. Officials: Beware Fee-Based Voter Registration Website

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – New Jersey officials are warning the public of a website taking people charging money to register to vote— a process that is free, WCBS 880's Levon Putney reported.

IWantToVote.com charges $6.95 plus $3 in postage and handling to register people to vote.

"Seeing this is disheartening because people are trying to take advantage of the public and fleece the public," Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin said as he checked the website. "And when you try to contact them, they don't show where they're located."

"We try to tell the public as best we can that you should never have to pay to register to vote," State Division of Elections Executive Director Robert Giles said.

To register, Giles said you can visit the county's website, the county election office website or in-person with the municipal clerk.

"There are so many opportunities to register to vote for free," Giles said.

Despite the lack of fee to register to vote, Giles said these websites pop up sometimes.

Durkin said lawmakers should tighten regulations to go after these sites.

"It's just not right to do to people who are unaware," Durkin said.
