N.J. Lawmakers To Discuss Joining Major Transportation Agencies

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - New Jersey spends four times more per mile on its highways than the national average and the state transportation trust fund is about to hit the big red "e."

"The money in that fund is gone. We need to understand exactly how that money got spent and how we can do it better," Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman John Wisniewski told WCBS 880's Alex Silverman.

Wisniewski says one possibility they'll look into is merging the agencies that handle transportation: the Department of Transportation, New Jersey Transit and the Turnpike Authority.

"We have a multiplicity of agencies, sometimes duplication efforts," he said.

The trust fund is fed with 14 and half cents on every gallon of gas.
