Only Female Officer On Muttontown Police Force Sues Over Claims Of Unfair Treatment

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island police officer claims she has been discriminated against because she is the only woman on the force.

In a $35 million lawsuit, attorney Eric Sanders alleges his client, Muttontown Police Officer Jennifer Lavin, was treated much differently than her male peers.

She was hired in 2011 and is the only female on the force.

The attorney told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall there is no women's restroom or locker room, no area for Lavin to pump breast milk for her twins, and she never received a bullet-proof vest.

"Men are equipped with a private room with lockers. They have a kitchenette set," Lavin said.

In an email to the Daily News, the mayor of Muttontown said Lavin's claims are false.

"Let them receive the same pay and benefits as the males. This is simple, this is not a complex issue. It's doing the right thing. It's so simple," Sanders said. "These things don't have to wind up in court litigation."
