MTA Kicks Off New Campaign To Make Railroad Crossings Safer

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The MTA is kicking off a new campaign to make railroad crossings safer, WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported.

The MTA's partnership with Operation Lifesaver has a simple goal.

"We are committed to reducing collisions, deaths and injuries at grade crossings and near railroad tracks," said President and CEO of the Safety Group Joyce Rose.

MTA Chief Tom Prendergast says one key element is education.

"We must do things like raise public awareness."

Agency Marketing Director Mark Heavy says they'll go to where people are -- their computers.

"So we're buying 10 million impressions on Facebook, we're buying websites and news feeds."

The Alliance was formed after a fatal train car collision in Valhalla last February.
