MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Town on Mount Pleasant has issued water restrictions until further notice Tuesday due to a malfunctioning water pump.

All homes and business in Hawthorne, Thornwood and Valhalla have been placed on a high water restriction, according to a notice on the town's website.

"Conservation is very important to maintain our water supply," the alert says.

It says the Commerce Street Pump station malfunctioned Monday evening. As a result, car washing and the use of lawn sprinklers are prohibited until further notice.

It's unclear what caused the problem or when the water ban will be lifted.
