More Than 5,000 Runners Turn Out For Garden City Turkey Trot

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Before some dug into their turkey dinner this Thanksgiving, they participated in a famous run on Long Island known as the Turkey Trot.

More than 5,000 runners took part in the 37th annual race outside St. Paul's School in Garden City Thursday morning.

The five-mile run is a fundraiser and a holiday tradition for many on Long Island, and participants don't have to be elite runners.

"The whole community comes out," said Garden City Turkey Trot organizer Ken Aneser. "It's just a great way to start the day with your friends, neighbors, and fellow runners from all across Long Island – a beautiful thing."

Throngs of spectators turned out to cheer the runners on.

The winner was Dan Clorley, who finished the five-mile race in just over 24 minutes.
