More Than 11M Distracted Driving Incidents Estimated Daily In Connecticut
STAMFORD, Conn. (CBSNewYork) - In Connecticut, it's estimated nearly 10 percent of drivers talk or text behind the wheel.
That means on any day there are more than 11 million separate instances of drivers using a handheld phone, WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.
The state Department Of Transportation had a research group survey local roads in seven towns, which came up with a statistical formula based on average daily traffic data.
Connecticut is currently in the middle of month-long distracted driving crackdown.
In Stamford, police use spotters on elevated roadways to spot violators.
Sgt. Andrew Gallagher said driver reaction runs the gambit.
"Either the driver goes, 'You couldn't see me and how did you see me?' and you have to tell them there's another officer up the road who saw the violation, or people understand that this is a national problem and everyone wants to see a crackdown on distracted driving, they just don't want to be the one that gets caught," he said.
