1 Dead, 8 Injured When Truck Slams Into Van On Montauk Highway

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- One person was killed and eight more were injured Tuesday – including a toddler – in a crash on Montauk Highway in Brookhaven, Long Island.

A van with eight people inside was headed west on the highway near Smith Road just before 5 p.m., when it was struck by a truck headed east that swerved across the roadway, Suffolk County police said.

The impact caused the van to flip over, police said.

Sandra Leon, 46, of Hempstead, was confirmed dead in the accident, and between seven and nine others were injured, police said. Among them was a toddler who was reported in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the truck – Gerard Demelfi, 28, of Shirley, and the driver of the van – Nieves Rivera, 37, of Patchogue – were also among the hospitalized, police said.

The injured were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue and Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, police said.
