Mom, Professor Pens Books About Going Off To College, Law School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Any parent with a high school student knows that the last few months before the transition to college can be very tough. Now one new author has two new books out, hoping to use her experience sending her child off to college to help other students and parents.

Paula Franzese, a professor at the Seton Hall University School of Law, wrote "A Short & Happy Guide To Being A College Student" and "A Short & Happy Guide To Being A Law Student."

"It began with my son, Michael," Franzese told CBS 2's Diane Macedo of her decision to write the books. "The summer before he was to begin at Boston College, it occurred to me that as his mom -- but also as an educator with so many years spent in the classroom gauging and evaluating my students -- that I could share with him a set of guideposts, a foundation on which to build a life of integrity, but even more essentially the nuts and bolts."

"A Short & Happy Guide To Being A College Student" covers how to prepare for classes, how to make a good first impression, how to write essays and choosing friends.

As for writing a similar book about law school, Franzese said she was motivated because "the law right now is suffering in significant measure, I think, because of a certain cynicism about lawyers, about the cost of a legal education. This book is an antidote."
