Family Says Caretaker Never Told Them That Schizophrenic Brooklyn Man Was Missing

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A caretaker has been accused of losing a patient, the grown man has been missing for almost 3 weeks.

His family had no idea what was going on until they showed up and saw an eviction notice on the door.

The Ortiz family tries to visit their oldest brother Cesar Ortiz Jr, as often as possible.

When they showed up to the Flatbush home where a caretaker looks after him an eviction notice was on the door.

"He's been missing 14 days, we found out 4 days ago, the caretaker never informed us or the police," Janette Messina told CBS2's Meg Baker.

The caretaker is paid by the state to house and take care of several men including Ortiz who lived there for more than 4 years.

The family is worried because Ortiz suffers from Schizophrenia.

"Being that he is off meds 14 days now, in a state of talking to himself, does hear voices, and becomes aggressive," Janette said.

The family said the caretaker told them he brought Ortiz to the Hotel Luxe on Atlantic Ave, but management said Ortiz was not among the group of men.

"I didn't see him. These guys were staying in 211. Caretaker paid money, but none of my employees saw this gentleman. We saw him the first day, but he never came in," the manager said.

The caretaker is Sherman Graham, CBS2 attempted to speak to him at the address where he now resides, and called him.

He offered no comment.

Messina got a tip that her 51-year-old brother had been spotted near the Barclays Center.

"Police informed me we can't press charges. Not a crime to not report someone missing. Shock to us, especially because he is mentally ill, and he is paid by the state," Messina said.

Ortiz was seen wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers, and has a beard.

CBS2 has reached out to the state to find out how this could happen.
